Since 2016 Dr Alex Murdin from ruralrecreation has been a curator for Austell Project – developing a cultural programme for St Austell in Cornwall, looking again at this post-industrial town and its world famous china clay landscape. This has involved establishing the Whitegold Festival, a small pop-up in 2016, now a growing regional event led by Cat Radford, to engage people with clay; reaching out to the British Ceramics Biennial in Stoke with Clay Exchange; and establishing a new International Ceramics Prize, curated by Dr Katie Bunnell, which focused in 2019 on clay & socially engaged practice and in 2020 on convivial clay.
