ruralrecreation is a member of N-E-W, a small artist’s cooperative programming place based art projects in and around the rural Dartmoor town of Ashburton.
We are a positive, enthusiastic, experimental, open platform for contemporary art.
Collaborating with a wider ecology of creatives, projects have included art weekenders and events like Art Safari (2014), Sound Saturday (2015), N-E-W… Ideas (2018) and N-E-W… Party (2022).
N-E-W Assembly (2023-24) is the most recent project focussing on engaging young and emerging artists with place and community. Assembly is curated by Rob Manners, a lecturer at Arts University Plymouth, who has been researching the role of artistic collaboration in building societies. The project brought together current and former students from South Dartmoor Community College with artists Sophia Clist, Mark Jessett, Rob Manners, Alex Murdin, Megan Perry, Andy Stacey, This Ain’t Jazz, Katie Upton and The Uplifter. The project was supported by Arts Council England, Arts University Plymouth, Born Hectic Events, The Guild of St Lawrence, Ashburton Arts Centre, Patter Scatter and the newly established Field System gallery. Produced by ruralrecreation.
